Why Do People Spend Time Playing Video Games?
It doesn’t seem to be productive in any way and people tend to be less social if they spend all their time on online games especially like runescape and world of warcraft. I know that people do it for entertainment like tv but if you play them do you ever wish that you could go out and live your life instead of a virtual one? Are you addicted to video games? Do the online game makers want you to be addicted like the tobacco companies want you to be addicted to cigarettes?
I think people play video games the same reason some people read books. You get to visit another world for awhile, and forget your troubles for the time being. Not only that, but you get to take part in this other world, instead of just sitting back and watching (or reading) it. It can be a very entertaining, and fulfilling, experience. Humans do a lot of ‘unproductive’ things. TV is certainly far less productive than playing a game. A game requires brainpower and hand-eye coordination. All the TV asks of you is your attention.
I’ve grown up playing video games, but i wouldn’t say that i’m addicted any more than a lover of books would say that they’re addicted to reading. Like most people, i play them for recreation.
Playing games CAN be abused. But lets be honest, anything can be abused and become detrimental to your health if done in excess. Drinking, eating, you name it.
The truth is, most gamers are not like these people that live in their basements, spending 20hrs straight on World of Warcraft. I’ve known a few people who have done this to themselves and with all of them, the game wasn’t the only problem in their life. Usually, prior to obsessing about the game, they are depressed. They have nothing to look forward too each day, and the outside world doesn’t give them any care, help, or support. Games like WoW offer them an escape. It is a completely different addiction than the one from cigarettes.
Most people play games, and “live their life” just fine.
i play video games because it catches my eye man. its like reading a book but playing it and you actually learn stuff sometimes.i spend at leaast 6 hours a day, AT LEAST. i dont know about the whole cigarete crap but it would be awesome if you could put your own body in a game and you play it man. that would be awesome.
In response to your last 3 questions… No, Yes and yes
thats not true some scientist say that playing video games makes your hand eye cordination and i always play video games but never world of WARCRAFT or RUNESCAPE i still have a life and i am not addicted to games but i am not addicted i could quit whenever i want
shut up you may be good at some things every one is good at there own individual thing some are good at art and others at reading so for some video games r fun , but i hardly dought that you’ve even played one be for . it gives you something to do on a rainy day or hot summer day or a freezing winter one or just something to do
Its good escapism from a stressful day. I dont think it means someone is antisocial when playing games, especiallly with online gaming. I have had a competition group for 5 years that meets all over the world to hang out and do non related game events. They are very social and the games is just a common way to relax and have fun together.
Some people take it too far and ignore reality, but they are the exception – not the rule. Many of us do it when we have the time and rather that than watching some inane tv show like friends. You cant just blanket judge people who play games. They come from many spectrums of life. My day to day is all law related, and the games are nice to kind of blow away the tension from the day. It is also a way for my gf and I to share a hobby together.
My cousins are really social and funny, but because they’re teenage boys, they happen to play a lot of video games. It doesn’t affect them negatively, but it does seem like they don’t have many other interests.
I’m not addicted to video games because the only game I played a lot more than average was runescape at one point. It was hard to think I was living in runescape because I didn’t ever want to think of myself as that ugly pixely thing. Ugh.
You question is pretty thought-provoking, but it’s directed mostly at the obsessed. I was a little angry at first, because I like video games!
It is a great way to decrease stress…and its actually been shown that most children who play video games at young age can develop motor skills and good hand eye coordination quite quickly
Sometimes I get stressed out and just want to get away from the real world, that’s why I play games.I wouldn’t say I’m addicted because I don’t play RuneScape or World of Warcraft and I never NEED to play games like they are drugs.
People play video games because they’re fun. Also if you play video games that doesn’t mean you don’t have a life. But you are right. A lot of people are addicted and any addiction is bad. I’m not addicted. I don’t think they want you to be addicted. For example, the president of nintendo/ creator of Mario said that he wants video game players to go outside, because that’s where the true memories come from. And it’s the experience sfrom the world outside of your home that gives them ideas anyway.
